WIN 98 SHUT DOWN ISSUES

Note: Check these solutions only if the procedure at this link (shutdown) fail to resolve the shutdown issue.

There are many causes that will keep Windows 98 from not shutting down correctly.

SYMPTOM: Instead of shutting down, the ect 48 System will restart.

SOLUTION: While the computer is rebooting, just after the RAM and Hard Drive have been checked, press the F8 key.
Make sure it is pressed BEFORE the message "Windows 98 starting..." or "Flash Rom Protected" appears.
If done correctly this will bring up a Windows 98 Start Up Menu.
Choose "Safe Mode" and press "Enter".
Allow Windows to load completely in Safe Mode. Shut down the computer. The computer should now turn off.
Power up the computer again, this time allowing it to start normally. The computer should load Windows 98 and the screen should look normal. This procedure corrects the shutdown problem in most cases.

Another reason that the computer may restart instead of shutting down is that the fast shutdown option has been enabled.
To disable fast shutdown option:
1. Open Start Menu /Run
2. In the text box type MSCONFIG

3. Click OK.
4. The System Configuration Utility window will open.

5. Click the Advanced button.
6. The Advanced Troubleshooting Settings window will open.
7. Make sure that the box is checked for Disable fast shutdown.

8. If it is not checked, check it, select OK, and close the System Configuration Utility.
9 Restart the computer. Allow complete loading of Windows. Shutdown.
10. If it is checked, select Cancel and close the System Configuration Utility. Go to next cause.

Another reason the computer does not shut down correctly is in the Power Management.

1. Open the Start Menu/Settings/Control Panel/ Power Management Properties.
2. Click the Advanced Tab.

3. The Power Buttons should have Shutdown as the value. If not, change the value and click OK.
4. Restart the computer. Allow complete loading of Windows. Shutdown.
5. If the value is already Shutdown then select Cancel.

This method should only be attempted by someone familiar with Hardware issues in the Windows OS.

Other reasons the computer will not shutdown.
1. System settings have changed from the factory default.
2. Hardware has been added with drivers that interfere with the shutdown process.
The main area of focus should be with the Ethernet and USB drivers.
The Ethernet Network and USB have been disabled in early ect 48 Systems to prevent shutdown issues. To use both, the devices must be enabled in a specific order as follows:
1. Disable these devices in the Hardware Manager then shut down the computer to have the changes take effect.
Allow complete Load of Windows. Shutdown again. The computer should shutdown once the offending driver is not being used.
2. Restart computer. Enable Ethernet Network keep USB Disable. Allow complete loading of Windows. Shutdown.
Restart computer. Now Enable USB. Allow complete loading of Windows. Shutdown
